Samuel Taylor Coleridge's greatest work, THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, is utterly unique, unlike any other ballad. No narrative poem has rivaled it in combining scenes of terror with scenes of incomparable beauty. Although enormously popular in the nineteenth century, it is seldom read or studied today. This annotated version by Martin Gardner will help to renew our appreciation for and deepen our understanding of Coleridge's neglected masterpiece.

Review Summary: The poem itself is genius yet the editor's comments are deeply flawed.
Review: This poem is brilliant and the book itself is beautifully packaged along with excellent illustrations. However, the editor's comments at the end are extremely biased and lack logic. On page 189, Mr. Gardner blatantly misses the point, implying that Coleridge did not, as Einstein has implored, want the readers to "extend their circle of compassion" to all living beings, but instead only meant "his fellow man." Here is perhaps one example of twisting the meaning of a text in order to justify one's own beliefs or actions. In a review referencing the mariner's extreme punishment, the writer failed to recall that the mariner did not suffer as long as he was telling his tale. This simply illustrates the relief of one who has the mission to be what we now would call a humane educator. Teaching kindness to all is one of the most noble pursuits and is so necessary today; let us learn the true and clear message of this poem.

Review Summary: A Beautiful Book!
Review: As well as the titular annotations--which are concise, well-written, and extremely helpful--this large book includes full-page reproductions of Doré's woodcuts and the older "uncut" version of the poem. The typography and layout imitate that of the period.
You can read both versions of The Ancient Mariner online, of course; but this is not a book for first encounters. It is a book for a reader who has come to love and admire the poem, and wants to own an aesthetic object that is worthy of it.
Having said that, the student of Coleridge's greatest poem will be well-served by Gardner's excellent annotations, which clarify and enrich the narrative by explaining difficult terms and providing certain valuable insights throughout, without bogging the reader down in lengthy exegetical scholium.
The book concludes with an interesting survey of various Freudian, Christian and moral interpretations.
A truly beautiful presentation of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Highly recommended!

Review Summary: An excellent book!
Review: This is well worth having, not only because of the fine annotations but also the wonderful illustrations. Some annotations, for me, seem to get in the way of reading the textl; in this volume, the annotation serves as a wonderful supplemental guide to the text. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Review Summary: Exhaustive "Rime"
Review: This is a very exhaustive presentation of the Rime. One heads up, though . . . this edition is not uniform in appearance and size with the other books in the "Annotated" series (i.e. The Annotated Alice, the Annotated Huckleberry Finn). It is larger and has a glossy cover.
