Editorial Review of Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness

A sweet little cat drives a man to insanity and murder....

The grim death known as the plague roams a masquerade ball dressed in red....

A dwarf seeks his final revenge on his captors....

A sister calls to her beloved twin from beyond the grave....

Prepare yourself. You are about to enter a world where you will be shocked, terrified, and, though you'll be too scared to admit it at first, secretly thrilled. Here are four tales -- The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hop-Frog, and The Fall of the House of Usher -- by the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. The original tales have been ever so slightly dismembered -- but, of course, Poe understood dismemberment very well. And he would shriek in ghoulish delight at Gris Grimly's gruesomely delectable illustrations that adorn every page. So prepare yourself. And keep the lights on.

Review Summary: Edgar Allen Tales of Myster & Madness
Review: I purchased this book along with several others along the same vane for my Grand Daughters. age 2 and 4 to eventually enjoy as I know they will. I am their Gran Pa and are really looking forward to reading it to them when they are old enough. Great illustrations which go great with a twist of the tale....

Review Summary: Worth every penny
Review: I bought this book for my niece for Christmas at her request. The book itself is a beauty. A large hard cover great quality book. It will last her a lifetime. I was very impressed with the size of the book and the quality of the book. My niece was very happy with it.

Review Summary: Edgar 5 Grimsley 3
Review: Edgar Allen Poe, the master of macabre has his goolish tales softened by Grimsley's illustrations. Poe's tales are a creepy pleasure but Grimesley's drawings, though compitent, are simply too cute for anyone beyond the age of ten. That being said, what a great way to introduce a young reader to one of our most revered literary giants.

Review Summary: Grim Irony
Review: I encountered this book in a teacher's book shelf and was intrigued by its author's name, Egar Allan Poe, who I had heard little about up until that pint, besides he was a great writer, and had a very tragic life.
The stories themselves were worth the price of the book alone, but the illustrations were breathtaking even more so; "The Masque of Red Death is one of my favorite Poe stories, and the depictions of Prospero's castle and its grim visitor were almost frighteningly detailed.
Over all, between the stories and the illustrations,I give this book 4.9 stars, my only complaint is that the stories ended too soon.

Review Summary: Stunning and Terrifying
Review: This book made me a die-hard Gris Grimly fan! The original Poe stories are only very gently edited (for length, not for content) and the illustrations add a wonderfully frightening edge. This book is shelved in our Teen section for good reason (the final illustration for "The Masque of the Red Death" might be the bloodiest illustration I've ever seen), but I heartily recommend this book for high schoolers, reluctant readers, adults, students who are having a hard time getting into the classics, or anybody else with a love of all things dark and spooky :)

For the young ones, check out another Gris Grimly book called "Boris And Bella".. all of the fun, none of the gore (well almost..)
