Review Summary: True masterpiece
Review: If an index could be created that would measure a book's significance and divide it by the number of words, few books would come anywhere near "Of Mice and Men". This is a book that every aspiring writer (and many active ones) should read and then keep in mind as a guide to packing meaning into every word, every image, every scene, and every character. Absolutely nothing is wasted here. The closest I have seen to this efficiency of meaning is in Octavia Butler's "Wild Seed."
When was the story set? It doesn't matter. This is a timeless tale of people facing adversity and trying to hold on to their humanity. The two central characters care for one another in a way that is seldom depicted this well in writing or on film. "Of Mice and Men" is a story of love and tragedy that ranks right with the Greek classics. After reading this book, you will feel that you walked side-by-side with these characters and saw what they saw, smelled what they smelled, and felt what they felt.
