Editorial Review of The Oxford Illustrated Jane Austen (Six Volume Set)

"R.W. Chapman's fine new edition has, among its other merits, the advantage of waking the Jane Austenite up.... The novels continue to live their own wonderful internal life...freshened and enriched by contact with the life of facts. His illustrations are beyond all praise."--E.M. Forster,
Abinger Harvest. This beautiful set provides the definitive text of Austen's six great comic masterpieces and her minor works (the latter include three high-spirited efforts written at about age fifteen; a charming fragment, The Watsons, which has been thought to be a sketch for Emma; and a
tantalizing fragment, Sanditon, written in the last year of her life). All six volumes feature splendid early 19th-century illustrations as well as Chapman's detailed explanatory notes. Chapman has collated all the editions published in the author's lifetime and previously unpublished manuscripts,
establishing an authoritative text that retains the punctuation, the spelling, and division into volumes of the originals. In addition, at the end of each work he supplies notes on textual matters and appendixes on such matters as the modes of address, or characters, or carriages and travel, as
these seem warranted by the text. Additional changes have been incorporated by Mary Lascelles.

Review Summary: The Pride of My Library
Review: When I was in high school, a friend gave me secondhand, paperback copies of all Jane Austen's novels, and I'm deeply grateful for the early introduction to her work. Naturally, though, twenty-odd years of ever-increasing devotion to this author took their toll on the books. After prolonged subtle (and not-so-subtle) hinting on my part, my husband replaced the worn, old paperbacks with this beautiful set last Christmas, and I love it! The books look lovely on the shelf; they will withstand regular re-reading; and the old printing style transports the reader to Jane Austn's world. As others have mentioned, the first word of the next page is printed at the bottom of each page, in the old style. I found it slightly distracting at first, but soon ceased to notice it. (At least, I thought I'd stopped noticing it, until I picked up a modern book and was surprised to find it printed differently.)

The current $94 price tag seems high (though it really isn't, if you think of buying almost any six new, hardcover novels); but any devotee of Miss Austen will find this set a worthwhile investment.

Review Summary: All of her works in a beautiful hardcover set
Review: I am surprised there aren't more reviews for this set as it is quite beautiful. Each of the six volumes fits perfectly in your hands, not too large, not too small. They are bound in blue hardcover binding with blue and gray dust jackets. The paper is quite thick, enough so that you can write in the book without seeing the writing on the other side of the page (I tend to make notes). Since other reviewers have already addressed that it is NOT a misprint for the bottom line of each page to be repeated at the top of the following page, I will not address that issue again. The type, as one reviewer stated, is old typesetting which gives it an authentic air. I have the Barnes and Noble addition that the other reviewer said was better. It's okay, easy to read if you're babied with modern printing, but I really like that this set has the old authentic print. There's something special about knowing that the book in your hand is printed almost exactly as it was first printed, complete with all her British punctuation, etc. It's still easy to read. The Barnes and Noble edition is inexpensive, but if you make any notations, they are visible on the other side of the page because the pages are thinner. These fit nicely on the shelf and look exquisite.

As for the price, I had these in my shopping cart and waited until they dropped to $34.50 and bought them. I have another set in my cart, waiting for them to drop in price again and give to a friend. If you can afford the $95 price tag, they are beautiful.

The six volumes are as follows: Volume 1=Sense and Sensibility. Volume 2=Pride and Prejudice. Volume 3=Minor Works (Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon). Volume 4=Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Volume 5=Mansfield Park. Volume 6=Emma.

I have not found another hardcover set here that has ALL of her works (listed above), so I'm not sure what the other reviewers were talking about. The other hardcover sets are incomplete.

Review Summary: Muddyboo's Misunderstanding
Review: Muddyboo's review claimed that he had twice received this set with a flaw at the bottom of every page, "an erroneous word" there by mistake.

Apparently he is unacquainted with books printed in the 19th century and early 20th century. They regular print, at the bottom right of every page, the first word of the following page. This was believed to be helpful to the reader.

It is NOT a "flaw" nor a misprint. It show how exactly correct this wonderful edition is. It is much the finest edition of the many editions of Austen's works I personally own.

Review Summary: THANK YOU, Jane and Amazon
Review: I have been watching the PBS's The Complete Jane Austen shows for a few weeks now and wanted to get a set of her books to enjoy as well. I came across this set and feel that I got more then my money's worth when I brought it. First of all, the price was just 37.50 and now I see it is back to 94.50. Secondly, the set it self is a good size. Not as small as paperbacks and not as large as some hardcovers making it easy to carry around and still clear in font size. Before I saw this, I was going to buy each book at BN which would have costed me much more. I got what I wanted here and for an amazingly good price. Thanks Amazon!

Review Summary: Don't bother with this edition
Review: Yes, Oxford alright, but a facsimile edition of the first printings from Jane Austen's own lifetime plus a facsimile of the Chapman edition from 1923 (that's as much as I could make out; it requires quite an amount of historical criticism in itself to reconstruct this edition) In other words, it has charm but for our modern eyes, spoiled by superclean desktop publishing, the print is too small, too narrow and WAAAAAY too irregular. I could accept this if it were either an original first edition, or else, if this edition were really cheap. But it isn't. In fact, it's quite costly. My advice: go with the Barnes and Noble editions; they are set in clean type and the introductions are interesting and readable. Plus, they cost a fraction of this edition
